Book Launch – A Grand Success
The book launch for Navigating the Nonprofit Rapids exceeded my expectations. We had 100 guests who attended and sold 50 books! The Center in the Square atrium was a grand space -–warm, inviting, beautiful and festive. I would like to give a shout-out of appreciation to my good friend, Jim Sears, whose leadership has been vital to this center city attraction and who made it available for our use on April 12th. My deep appreciation also goes to his assistant, Tiffany Beheler, who helped to coordinate with our team on layout of our event.
There are so many to thank for a perfect event. The program featured John B. Williamson, III, who served as moderator. Remarks were given by Terri Leidich, publisher of BQB and WriteLife publishing companies; William Fralin, CEO of Medical Facilities of America and former Virginia Delegate; Sherman Lea, Roanoke City Councilman and Mayoral Candidate; Professor Tom Lachowicz of Radford University, and Annette Lewis, President and CEO of TAP. Senator John Edwards and staff members of Delegate Sam Rasoul were also in attendance.
A very special cake in the shape of the book was designed by Selena Mayo, Director of TAP’s Head Start program. Music was provided by William Penn and Bill Hoffman, both of whom have been instrumental in the TAP story. Sarah Gatrell provided all of the social media and marketing assistance for the event. My wife, Liz, and daughter, Eva, helped with the refreshments and handling book sales.
We are all aware of the slogan “it takes a village to raise a child.” It also takes a team to write, publish, and market a book. In my acknowledgement section of the book, I recognize the many people who helped shape the book’s content with their critical reviews of a series of drafts. Terri Leidich and her publishing company were indispensable in producing a very respectable work. A succession of reviewers, many of whom are recognized on the covers and the first couple of pages, contributed greatly. The coverage by Roanoke Times writer, Matt Chittum, of the launch event and my journey as an author has also been truly important.
Today, there are close to two million nonprofits in America, representing a trillion-dollar industry. This book, with a wide potential readership, addresses the issues faced by the growing number of those who serve as staff and board members of nonprofits. Colleges and universities throughout America are weaving certificates and minors in nonprofit leadership and management into their business and public policy departments. The University of Richmond now has a Nonprofit MBA program for those seeking nonprofit leadership.
In the end, the work will sell itself. The challenge for someone without the marketing departments of the Random Houses of the world is to get enough people to read it in order for a public evaluation to take place. Our goal is to get 50 reviews on Amazon by the end of this May. With just four five-star reviews to date, we have already gotten some initial publicity from Amazon. Please take the time to give an honest review. According to marketing research, the number of reviews is even more important than all of them being five-star!
